First Union 400

The 1991 First Union 400 saw 8 different drivers lead the race. Pole sitter Brett Bodine (116.237 mph) led the most laps—103, but finished 30th after a crash. Darrell Waltrip made the trip to victory lane. Dale Earnhardt, Jimmy Spencer, Morgan Shepherd and Ken Schrader completed the top 5. The margin of victory was just 0.81 seconds. The race was slowed 17 times for cautions flags for a total of 87 laps.

Making their first appearance at the track in a Winston Cup race were rookie of the year contenders, Ted Musgrave and Bobby Hamilton. Musgrave finished 17th, Hamilton 21st. Both cars were running at the finish. Mickey Gibbs also made his first NWS appearance. His day was not so successful. Problems put him in the last place, 33rd.
