Behold, the finalized proposal for a monument honoring the North Wilkesboro Speedway. Several modifications were made for cost reasons however the message is to remain the same. We have incorporated some ideas from the other two submissions in hopes for a stronger design. Preliminary planning has begun between STS and local officials on this project, more information will hopefully be available soon.

8/14: The first annual Wilkes County Racing Heritage Celebration will be held on September 29, 2007 between 12:00pm and 4:00pm on the grounds of the Wilkes County Heritage Museum. We plan to have on display vintage race cars along with former drivers and champions. We will be posting in the coming days more information on the event on the main page and the monument page.

6/7: The first annual celebrating North Wilkesboro racing heritage event slated for April 14th has been postponed until September 29, 2007. This gives us more time to prepare for a much better event. Mark your calendars and plan on attending! We will be posting updates as news develops.

1/24: As we move forward in placing the North Wilkesboro Speedway Monument we are introducing a buy a brick that will be personally engraved and placed in a walk way around the monument.

THE DESIGN:

The large round base has been replaced with a smaller, two-tiered square stone base. The main body of the monument still consists of a tall, rectangular column with the following inscription engraved upon its face: **

The left and right sides of the monument are to honor both the drivers and signifigant persons who contributed so much to the North Wilkesboro Speedway. Upon the left side are listed the names of the drivers who have competed in NASCAR's lower divisions. The Baby Grands / Goody's Dash Series, The Busch Grand National Series, the Craftsman Truck Series, Modifieds, and Sportsman Series*. Also honored on this side are Enoch Staley and his Brother Gwyn, as well as Lou Figaro, a driver who lost his life racing at North Wilkesboro. Other names of those signifigant to the track may also be enscribed after all careful planning has been made.

Upon the right side of the monument will be two colums of names, the first column will honor the winners of the NASCAR Grand National Series...(The premiere NASCAR Series Pre-Winston era) and on the second column will be the winners during the Winston Cup (aka "Modern Era")

On the top of the monument will be engraved the logo of North Wilkesboro Speedway. This is engraved on an angled plane. This plane is cut at 14 degrees and is a reminder of the banking of the track.

Proposed on the back of the monument is an excerpt from Thomas Wolfe's short story 'The Last American Hero is Junior Johnson. Yes!'
The enscription reads:

TEN O'CLOCK Sunday morning in the hills of North Carolina. Cars, miles of cars, in every direction, millions of cars, pastel cars, aqua green, aqua blue, aqua beige, aqua buff, aqua dawn, aqua dusk, aqua aqua, aqua Mallaca, Mallaca lacquer, Cloud lavender, Assassin pink, Rake-a-cheek raspberry, Nude Strand coral, Honest Thrill orange, and Baby Fawn Lust cream-colored cars are all going to the stock-car races, and that old mothering North Carolina sun keeps exploding off the windshields...

Seventeen thousand people, me included, all of us driving out Route 421, out to the stock-car races at the North Wilkesboro Speedway...

Also proposed on the back would be a graph of the shape of the racetrack, as well as a placement credit for Save the Speedway Motorsports, Inc.

The monument, depending on the amount of funding which will be needed. Will either be erected and engraved at the same time or will have lettering added at later times. If corporate sponsors are found to fund the monument, those companies and other major benefactors will be credited on the monument's base. Once (and even before) the monument has been built, plans are to begin having annual gatherings in Wilkes County celebrating the rich racing history with the possibility of old drivers, cars, and celebrations occuring. Stay tuned for further developments.

*Information on Modified and Sportsman Winners are very sparse, these winners may be added at a later date as more research has been performed

**Design still subject to change and modification
